Notre-Dame de Paris
French Musical, Opening Night @ David H. Koch Theater, NY
As an international traveler witnessing the beauty, complexity, and timeless message of a story first written by Victor Hugo was a humbling and tremendous experience. Opening night left the audience in standing ovation for the incredible performances given, all brought together by the visionaries Gilles Maheu, Martino Müller, Richard Cocciante, and Luc Plamondon. The technical difficulties regarding the English subtitles did not break from the powerful voices, brilliant dance and lighting choreography, and literal as well as symbolic bell-ringing. Angelo Del Vecchio, Hiba Tawaji, Daniel Lavoie, Gian Marco Schiaretti, Jay, and Emma Lépine sang as a company in harmony with a strength of pride filling every note and word with masterful passion. An unforgettable experience, and may God bless and help every outcast and immigrant seeking safety from the atrocities and injustices in our world.
Eleven Madison Park
A 3 Michelin Star Restaurant, NY
The evening took an unforseeable turn that started out with the unpredictable traffic that reigns across the hectic streets of New York City. Dinner started with a Cucumber drink though I had ordered Watermelon. The Watermelon promptly arrived thereafter and acted as the perfect sparkling palette cleanser between each of the six courses served. An enjoyable first course, presented with thinly sliced cucumbers atop a delightful dumpling, left one with a slight mushroom and truffle aftertaste. The second course and my second favorite of the evening had to be the smoky Japanese eggplant and crisp radish Tostada. A mouthwatering experience, paired well with a soft Tahini and flavorful Tonburi. An excellent decision to start the third course with a delicious croissant reminiscent bread and sunflower shaped butter with an almost marmite inspired miso center. The light summer bean dish that followed transported the tongue with every bite of delicate edible petals. The almost sweet and sour of the fourth course was moreish and as much as I adored the shaved corn, another aftertaste of mushroom had me wishing for a different predominant flavor. There are two words to describe the fifth course, fascinating and disappointing. I am a squash fan and though I typically avoid spicy peppers the poblano paired with a coriander sauce was lovely. The sour gravy and Seitan destroyed the dish for me. I can fully understand the challenge to cater to guests with a long list of allergies and a vegan diet. However, I expected more than a reliance on mushrooms, the use of wheat meat, as well as an overdose of either sour, salty, and/or spiciness. The peach dessert saved the night. Beautiful white Elderflowers decorated a mouth melting peach crumble matching the stars on the ceiling where we sat. The sorbet side washed the tongue in a refreshing and soothing cherry. Unfortunately, the white almond praline sauce was an unwelcomed bitter to an otherwise delightful sixth course. The evening ended with a chocolate pretzel, which similar to each of the prior dishes looked exquisite but left the mouth craving a peach crumble repeat to remove the overpowering saltiness. Throughout the evening there was a distinctive wood burning smell, which on a cold wintery night is a warm welcome, but when paired with attempting to enjoy flavor filled dishes removes a sensory factor needed to fully embrace the time and preparation that goes into delivering a six course meal. I was most grateful to finally receive a menu after attempting to decipher the speed-mumble that accompanied most of the courses. Although the granola, raisin, and pistachio breakfast gift was a sweet gesture it would have been more impressive if delivered in a smaller and more compact parcel. In summary, I believe the meals were to perfection and for a non-vegan would be quite the highlight, however for someone who delights in a diverse selection of vegetables, I yearned for a wow factor experience. The creation of an exquisite meal is an art and relies heavily on a team of individuals working together and supporting one another, not only in the kitchen, but also serving the guests. A guest should not have to repeatedly request the refill of a glass of water, endure a half-cleaned table, or be surrounded by rather uninspiring wall paintings. Whatever lacked in the ambiance of the evening, each meal continues to individually shine in the mind. - Review not given by a Michelin Guide Inspector.
Le Botaniste (127 Grand St.)
Organic Plant-Based Food & Natural Wine, NY
An accidental and happy find, while walking the crowded streets of SoHo. The delicate flavoring of butternut squash soup along with vegetable balls and a unique mint sauce was out of this world. On a hot summers day, drinking black iced tea and enjoying a delicious chocolate brownie was heavenly. My only complaint is that I could not stay longer or eat more. Update: The brownie is still heavenly and the veg balls delightful. The summer sushi roll lives up to its name as the cold bite with tangy lemon chili noodles, avocado, and cabbage mix fills the belly and leaves one feeling refreshed. A great summer combo! The pecan cookie had a simultaneous soft and crunchy texture, and neither the pecans nor the chocolate chips were overpowering. Ask for the tonic type drinks such as the Dark and Stormy Vanilla & Charcoal that comes in a mini Erlenmeyer flask glass. The drinks are both cute and the Vanilla & Charcoal pairs well with each course.
Erin McKenna's Bakery
Vegan & Gluten-Free, NY
A joyful treat, but I do not recommend carrying a box of treats in the hot sun or too far a distance unless you bring a cooler box and place the treats in a fridge immediately. Fresh or melted, I could devour the chocolate chip cookie sandwhiches all day long. Also, the chocolate brownie with vanilla frosting was beautifully decorated with baby blue food-colored petals, a green leaf, and yellow nonpareil center. Delicious!
Bull Hill Short Loop Hike
Cold Spring, NY
Under no circumstances embark on this hike if you have a small bladder. There are no bathrooms along the hike and those at the start of the hike are less than appealing. The area is beautiful with breathtaking views and the sweet smell of a lush green forest. If attempting the hike on a hot day, wear sunscreen as there are quite a few open sunny spots to bake in. The start of the hike is an uphill climb, which tends to go on for much longer than is pleasant, although the path is at least clearer than the constant long-legged spiders crossing on the hike back down. Given the amount of ants and flying insects, I would suggest wearing comfortable pants, socks, and shoes. I would personally recommend against attempting the hike in sandals, a dress, or skirt. An easy enough trail to follow with great cell service will have hikers enjoying their walk to a mansion surprise close to the end of the Short Loop. Note that the stickers change from white, yellow, red, and blue to a long flat walk near a train track that eventually ends up back in a parking lot. Dogs are welcome but there are many areas along the hike that are off limits to humans and canine buddies alike. Make sure to visit Cold Spring's village for some more stunning views.
Hudson Hil's Cafe
Cold Spring, NY
Whether or not you are a vegan, but definitely if you are a vegan, if you want fluffy soft delicious pancakes coated in chocolate chips and/or blueberries, served with maple syrup, honey, and/or butter then look no further because this is the spot for you!
Uncle Charleys Ice Cream
Cape May, NJ
One scoop does not mean a scoop, but rather two American scoops or four European scoops. The flavors are daring, dreamy, and delicious. Always a winner when one finds a masterfully made, subtle flavored banana ice cream.
The Original Fudge Kitchen
Cape May, NJ
I am unable to put into words what it meant to return to my youth and home country in each bite of wonderful fudge. From vanilla to chocolate, chunks of chocolate to chocolate chip vanilla, and chocolate with nuts that last well past a week if kept frozen (do not refrigerate), little compares to the inner child's joy one may relive with every bite. Thank you!
A'A Roots
Maui, Hawaii
Friendly, caring, and considerate servers that serve fresh, tasty, and memorable meals. The seasonal, cold mango smoothie is one of the best I have ever tasted. Fresh by the hour baked choclate chip and marshmallow cookies are super delicious with the right combination of softness and crunch. Ask for a takeaway tub to avoid sticky fingers, but the cookies do lose a little of their munchy-ness after refrigeration. If you are looking for a refreshing and filling meal try the soba bowl with noodles that comes with edamame, carrots, cabbage, black sesame seeds, and an over generous amount of peanut sauce. One of the other tasty dessert items on the menu is a cinnamon cheesecake with macadamia nuts. The taste is amazing, and almost similar to a Crema porridge in terms of flavor but one elevated by the addition of the nuts.
Indian Grill N Curry
Maui, Hawaii
One of the best Indian Restaurants I have enjoyed both inside and outside of India. The meals taste home-cooked and every dish is cooked to perfection. The servers are super inviting and friendly, and quickly start to feel more like friends and family. Do not miss out on the beautiful purple potato samosa's with mint and tomato chutney. The Naan bread is fluffy, soft, and eggless, and the Tandoori Roti is healthier and even tastier. I tried four different dishes, each served with perfectly cooked white rice, on three different nights. The paneer mutter was light but filling, tasty and packed full of flavor even after I requested a mild spicy level. The malai kofta's sauce was white with a hint of french onion aftertaste and stretched as I lifted the kofta up with a spoon. The kofta was soft and delicious, and melted in the mouth. The last dish I tried was an Aloo Mutter, which was tasty and continued to produce steam up until the last mouthful. The sauce paired well with the tomato flavor from a paneer makhani dish, which was light on the tomato and therefore not sour. The paneer in the paneer makhani dish was exactly the right texture, size, and taste. Indian Grill N Curry is an exceptional restaurant that honors its food, customers, and country.
Flatbread Company
Maui, Hawaii
If you have time and love a good wood-fire baked pizza, then Flatbread Company's freshly made flatbreads are just right for you. If in need of hydration from the hot sun, their lemonade hits the spot, and I highly recommend ordering a half and half flatbread to try as many different types of the flatbread dishes on the menu. The two tastiest flatbreads I had the privilege of enjoying was a purple sweet potato pie. The sweet potato was crispy and paired well with the kale. A touch rich in flavor but worth every bite. The pesto flatbread with olive, tomato, and goats cheese was absolutely mouthwatering. Every single bite made the mind float and feel at ease. The creamy Chocolate Torte with nuts at the end of lunch, topped with coconut shavings, and served with the softest both sweet and sour pineapple was a happily ever after ending to a wonderful meal.
Ululani's Hawaiian
(Gourmet) Shave Ice
Maui, Hawaii
Be prepared to stand in a very long line that moves quickly at this super popular stand. On top of the many flavors and toppings to choose from make sure to check out the seasonal options available. A few of the combinations I tried was a bubblegum and cotten candy with a snow cap, but regrettably the Li Hing Mui (salted plum) flavor didn't pair well with the other sweet flavors. Although if you enjoy plum wine then I do believe the Li Hing Mui flavor will be perfect for you and if you are feeling adventerous and the seasonal option is availble try pairing the Li Hing Mui with the Li Hing Mui Mango. I also tried a tasty mango flavor paired with a blue in color vanilla and pineapple with a Li Hing Mui reduction drizzle. I could not taste the pineapple but the Li Hing Mui was lovely as a drizzle. The best combination I tried was a refreshing lychee, creamy leche, nutty almond, and sweet snow cap. The flavors only improved as they mixed while the ice melted fast into the cup. I will add as delightful as the Shave Ice may taste, especially on a hot day, the acidic aftertaste (regardless of flavor combination) can catch a person off guard later on.
Moku Roots
Maui, Hawaii
Fascinating meals and delicious delights. If you enjoy a strong taste of iced lavender then I highly recommend the lavender honey lemonade. The Thai Ice Tea has a strong pleasant tea flavor, but the use of nut milk instead of condense milk means the drink sometimes tastes a touch powdery. For lunch one day I tried a plate of Raw Pad Thai. The thin cut zucchini, roots, and carrot noodles were served with red cabbage and a spicy sauce. The cold avocado served on the side was perfectly cut and added a pleasant break from the spiciness. I appreciated the lemon wedge, and though the nut topping was tasty there was a risk of cracking a tooth on some hard bits. On another lunch occasion I tried a yuca falafel wrap, which was warm, covered in a delicious aioli, and had a tasty filling. I am now a big fan of yuca falafels. I am also a huge fan of Moku Roots' double chocolate chip cookies, which look more like a brownie. The incredible taste of the cookies can be best described as super scrumptious and yummy, with a soft brown center and soft darker chocolate brown coating. The cookie is actually made with ulu/bread fruit, but though the hint of fruitiness can be detected it only enriches the chocolate flavor. The cookies do not make a person feel heavy though they are filling, and the cookies also don't crumble but are more similar to holding a soft fudge that leaves the fingers only feeling slightly sticky. The cookies can act as a stomach cleanser so I do recommend taking them to go and keeping them refrigerated. The cookies only improve after sitting in the cold, and the leaf parcel they are wrapped in is a joy to open every time. Moku Roots does their utmost to avoid plastic and even offer sturdy child-friendly straws that are not as hard as steel straws or dissolve in the mouth as paper straws do. An educational experience.
Choice Health Bar
Maui, Hawaii
The Wow Maui Smoothie, made of strawberry and papaya has a natural candy flavor to it, but without the artificial flavoring. The refreshing smoothie pairs well with the Burrito Bowl, (which I ordered without the jalapeños). The bowl has a nutty sauce, and only a touch of tomato (without the overpowering onion flavor of a pico de gallo.) A delightful and healthy lunch.
Island Cream Co.
Maui, Hawaii
Numerous flavors are available even for those who prefer eggless ice cream. The cookies and cream with pieces of Oreo cookie (but smoother and without the typical Oreo chocolate powdery taste) paired well with a creamy and light vanilla flavor. The vanilla flavor was made up of five different types of vanilla, making it extra smooth in taste. The best pairing with the vanilla was a caramel. The caramel was made with a dulce de leche and came with an almost Snickers type of pure liquid caramel. Definitely one of the top ten ice cream scoop pairings that I have ever tasted.
Earth Aloha Eats
Maui, Hawaii
A Food Truck located near Keawe St., with minimal seating in the shade, and food like you cannot believe. The citrus water may change from hydrating to sour if left alone for too long, but if you order the Phish and chips then the lemon and lime can be put to further good use. The Phish is made of a soy and tempeh that does not leave the stomach feeling as if you have digested a brick as oftens happens after eating Beyond Meat. The white sauce tasted similar to a cream and did not contain the usual lemon and dill. The lightly vinegared red cabbage was actually the best part of the dish, and I loved the perfectly thin sliced chips. A fair amount of lettuce and sprouts served with the dish can easily be eaten with the flat (almost chopstick wood like) forks available. Nothing beats the eggless crème brûlée served in a jar. One of the top three crème brûlées in the world I have ever devoured, and the other two were made with egg. The eggless crème brûlée at Earth Aloha Eats was made with a near custard texture, but smoother and lighter. Little can beat the beautiful and perfect color of the caramilzed topping that cracks with a touch of pressure. Moreish and exquisite.
Hāna and Beyond
Maui, Hawaii
Local born, Tour Guide Charlie has a great heart, love for community, and sense of humor. The drive was smooth with stunning views. A few highlights from the drive included countless waterfalls, rainbow trees in the tropical rainforest, turtles on the beach, surfers riding Maui's waves, Haleakalā, and the smooth pebbles on Black Lava Rock beach. (Two stories; Maui's ocean has a personality and enjoys collecting weddings rings and bands. Anyone who removes from the island that which belongs to the island such as a lava rock or pebble from the Black Rock Beach will experience bad luck.)
Skyline Hawaii's Sunrise Tours
Maui, Hawaii
South African born, Tour Guide Trevor is punctual, actively supports those in need, and will allow you to sleep on the way up Haleakalā where one can view the craters, sunrise, and/or sunset. (Even though our bus broke down en route, Trevor called for help and made sure to drive us safely and quickly to still reach the sunrise in time.) At approx. 10,000 feet the wind can be extremely chilly when viewing the sunrise so do dress accordingly and wear gloves to protect your hands if you wish to take photographs. Even though we were not able to eat breakfast before the sunrise, Trevor made sure we had the opportunity to enjoy our pre-booked meals at the breathtaking Kula Lodge.
Maui to Moloka'i, Hawaii
Blue Hawaiian Helicopters
An unforgettable experience. The Tour starts with a safety video before seats are assigned. Make sure not to wear any white (reflection) or black (hot) clothing while flying. If you wish to take photographs (and esp. if you use your phone) keep in mind that your reflection will appear in most of the photos. The view is magnificent from Maui, across the Pacific Ocean, to Moloka'i, and back. The flight is steady and smooth. The turns are gentle, and the closer one flies up toward the clouds the more one can feel the helicopter. It is unadvisable to fly during a storm, but gentle raindrops on the windows look lovely.
Gir Forest Safari
Gujarat, India
The Safari experience in Gujarat falls somewhere between visiting the Zoo and your typical Jeep Safari in South Africa. You're almost guaranteed to see Lions and there are plenty of spotted deer or Chital near the one-way roads surrounded by caterpillar devoured trees. The morning hours are far less dusty than the crowded afternoons, but it is still recommended to bring a cover for your nose and mouth. Little owls hide and massive boars peek-a-boo in the distance, but the true delight is the number of peacocks flying freely in the park and often displaying their beautiful colors. The Safari guides are well informed and the hospitality in Gujarat is heartwarming. In particular, my utmost gratitude to the one cab driver who stopped out of his own to buy a piece of ginger so that I could use the ginger juice to help recover from a fit of allergy induced coughs. An Indian Safari experience is a must!
The Postcard Gir Wildlife Sanctuary
Talala, Gujarat, India
Lotus ponds, fresh vegetable gardens, and pottery lessons on the side set the ambiance of the Postcard Hotel in Gir. I had the privilege to try a few breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. The most memorable breakfast, paired with a strong cup of black ginger tea, had to be the oatmeal porridge served with cinnamon, stewed diced apples, and tiny diced bananas in a little pot of honey. A close tie was the millet pancake with fried bananas almost the texture of a chunky mousse and coated on top with powdered sugar. Accompanying the pancake was a maple syrup, a thick but not rich chocolate syrup, and a tasty warm blueberry compote rich in its thickness. Assorted fruits, such as a fresh melon, papaya, and/or sweet pineapple slice accompanied the pancake. For lunch the noodle broth without garlic and mushrooms was heavenly and paired wonderfully with the crispy papadums and roti bread basket. I happened to try a delicious mango and pistachio mint smoothie, which would have been perfect if chilled. Another lunch favorite was the Paneer Kathi Roll, which was light, crispy in the right way, and didn't come with the typical overpowering green pepper and onion flavor. If you're looking for a boost of flavor then I highly recommend the Sabudana Khichdi with potato, nuts, and bay leaves that pairs heavenly with a bliss mint chutney. My favorite dinner had to be the light tomato based paneer matar with a soft like silken tofu textured paneer that paired exceptionally well with a jeera and coriander rice. A couple delicious side dishes served had to be the lemon yogurt broccoli, and a grill flavored cauliflower inside a semi-crisp bite sized potato bucket.
Hamleys Wonderland
JioWorld Garden, Mumbai, India
A super fun kids carnival with more than enough activities, a parade, and tasty treats for all ages to enjoy. The milky hot chocolate with cocoa topping was lovely and hot. There was a mini Tacos Ice Cream stand with a Taco Ice Cream that had a delicious Belgian chocolate ice cream center and was topped with pearl chocolates. The other flavor I managed to try was a vanilla bean with a chocolate crumble topping. My second favorite treat was the Tornado Twister stand with a deep fried potato on a skewer. The less processed version of an American Nacho Cheese sauce flavor was nice, but the plain fried potato was even better. My favorite, and a flavor I highly recommend, was the chat masala Tornado Twister, not too spicy and not too sweet, but rather just perfect!
Mad Over Donuts
Mumbai, India
Mad Over Donuts is the best takeaway for donuts that I've ever tried. The donuts (without a hole in the middle) arrived undamaged in their packaging. Super tasty, I tried the Chocolate Decadence, which was double coated in dark chocolate and had a thick dark chocolate center. The Chocolate Bomb donut had a delicious creamy white center which paired well with the dark and white chocolate coating. Last but not least I tried the Bavarian, which though plain in comparison to the other two donuts had a beautiful dark and white chocolate coating design. It is impossible to have only one donut from Mad Over Donuts and the variety as well as the flavors will keep you coming back for more.
SAZ American Brasserie
Mumbai, India
My experience at SAZ began with a light fluffy warm bread and touch of tangy sweet marinara type sauce that was almost orange in color. Delightful! I drank a Peach Ice Tea that was oddly sharp and sour, served with an orange slice and came with a white foamy top. (I am all for protecting the environment, but I must confess that paper straws are a pest and often destroys the flavor of a drink.) The quacamole starter was freshly made and arrived with a well spiced salsa (not overly sour or spicy), a non-overpowering cheese sauce, and a perfect pairing of sour cream topped with chives. Most dishes were shared and the second starter that arrived was a Burrata Toast with a touch too big avocado slices, baby tomatoes, seeds, and edamame beans. My favorite dish of the evening had to be the slightly spicy sphaghetti coated in an olive and buttery flavoring that softened the chili bite. The broccoli, black olives, corn, pea shoots, and bell peppers in the dish all tasted fresh and enhanced the meal. I tried a slice of pizza next that had the rare correct thickness in crust (enough crust to hold the toppings but not so much that the meal fills a person with bread). A touch too must oil for my preferance, but the pizza tasted good with the zucchini circles, pepper triangles, sweet corn, and black olives. The last dish that arrived was a Pesto Penne that was not overpowering in the pesto flavoring, which is very rare. The purple shoots, mouth melting mozzarella, black olives, and hint of sundried tomato added to the dish and ended the evening on a high note.
Cou Cou
Mumbai, India
Number one favorite experience of the year had to be the phenomenal desserts served at Cou Cou! The Walnut Brownie was rich and nutty. The steaming hot Peppermint Tea was also rich and smooth. I tried a slice of the Chocolate Decadence that had a dark chocolate crumble bottom layer and a center that surprised me with its almost chocolate ice cream texture and flavor. The Kumquat Chocolate Mousse arrived in a Taco Ice Cream shape, but was light and tasted of oranges. Pure perfection had to be the Vanilla and Peach with a crumble bottom and creamy light center that was beyond heavenly!
Adventures
Vegan Vegetarian, Experiences, & Thrilling Travels
Kozmo Café & Vineria
Gozo, Malta
The Fungi Pizza at Kozmo is delicious, and I'm not a big mushroom pizza fan! The thin crust can be ordered with a cheesy crust although there is a generous enough amount of cheese without any additions. The mushroom topping does eventually overpower, but that's only after the fourth or fifth slice. If you're looking for a delightful and chocolately mid or after meal drink then I highly recommend the Hazelnut Hot Chocolate with actual hazelnut pieces. Every small sip brings a smile to the dial, and will tempt a return to the restuarant if not at least seconds.
Gozo, Malta
Cardamom Indian Restaurant
I love a good Papadum starter with a tangy fresh mango chutney, and even more so when given the choice of a plain Papadum or roasted with cumin seeds. I also enjoy the ability to mix certain dishes such as two different types of rice. The Pea Pulao and Jeera Rice complemented one another when I tried a spoonful of each with the creamy Paneer Makhani main dish. If the Paneer Makhani at a restaurant is made with a tomato base that isn't sour and comes served with a good portion of paneer that is soft in texture, then I know the meals are made with love and care. I would gladly order from Cardamom again and again.
Fior di Latte
Mdina, Malta
The garden walk to Fior di Latte is a breath of fresh air topped only by the delectable scoops of ice cream waiting at the end. The chocolate is thick, rich, and creamy. The mint chocolate contains extra minty and crunchy thin pieces of flat dark chocolate surprises in every mouthful. Be prepared to stand in a long line that extends well outside the doors of the ice cream shop, but the line goes quickly and the treat at the end is well worth the wait.
Henry J. Bean's Bar & Grill
San Giljan, Malta
So, I thought I knew my hot chocolates and had tasted a thick hot chocolate before, nope! The shameless, sweet and succulent, melted brownie level of thickness that coated my throat was heavenly. Not to be crude, but the constipation-in-waiting was worth the unforgettable drink, although the semolina pudding the next day at a different location perhaps not so much (though effective in providing relief...eventually.) Another, less risky drink, would be the Heavenly Angel Mocktail that tastes similar to a piña colada. I tried the Nachos Deluxe without jalapeños (as there was enough of a kick in the salsa). The helpings of sour cream and smooth guacamole, as well as the salsa, on top of the cheesy nachos was more than enough, which I must add is rare. I typically lament not having enough of one or the other ingredient served with the nachos, but not here. I also tried the Vegan Loaded Potato Skins, which were super cute with their crispy on the outside and almost mashed potato texture on the inside type potato cups. On top of the cups were far too many mushrooms and a lackluster cheese, but somehow still tasty when paired together with the side of salad. Not your typical diced salad, but carefully chosen pieces of lettuce, sliced tomato, thin slices of carrots and peppers, with a light red (almost orange) sauce on top. For pure vegans and vegetarians, fair warning the Bar & Grill does smell heavily of grilled barbecued meat. Personally, I don't mind the barbecue smell, but if you used to eat and enjoy meat like I once did then it can be very tempting to return to the Meat Side of cuisine.
Don Royale
San Giljan, Malta
Sure, I have traveled to Italy, maybe not many places, but their pizzas are undeniably the best...and yet...never have I embarked on the taste bud heaven such as the Don Jr. Margarita Pizza gave me at Don Royale. The soft, fluffy, bread melting flavor...yes, flavor even without any toppings added was remarkable! No, I was not swayed by the cute kalamta olive eyes, cherry tomato nose, and thin ham slice for a mouth presenting a super cute smiley. Respect to the Chef who created this Don of a pizza in Malta. The Don Gorgonzola pizza with walnut, figs, more than generous gorgonzola, and a hint of a green sauce was also tasty and full of flavor. It didn't beat Don Jr. for me, and neither (surprisingly) did the crunchy Nutella with pistachio shavings on a crispy dessert pizza. The hot chocolate was solid with a clear line of separation between the chocolate and creaminess, most professional. The Virgin Island mocktail was not up for partying on the Maltese islands, unfortunately, as the apple juice, Pepsi, lemon, and black tea refused to play well with one another. (I might also be biased as I prefer Coca-Cola to Pepsi.) The drink was not awful but also not the best. One detail about the Don Royale that I wholly appreciated was a 'Call Me' button on every table in the event that the restaurant was busy and one needed the waiter's attention. However, even with fully booked tables the service was excellent, quick and friendly responses throughout the evening.
Eataly
World Trade Center, NY
A Zucchini Frittata that tastes like fresh fish and chips with a squeeze of lemon (or lime when combined with a lemon and orange sparkling mocktail) is a mouthwatering dream come true for anyone who used to eat meat and has little to no appetite for vegan meat. (To be clear the dish contains no fish or meat of any kind, and Eataly takes allergies seriously.) If you're interested in a light lunch dish then I highly recommend the Pasta Pomodoro. The fresh and not sour mini tomatoes are packed with flavor. The dish is tangy, contains fresh basil, and an el dente sphaghetti (without any sign of white, which to me indicates a professional culinary skill with regards to serving customers. Though el dente may be served with a slight dot of white, I have personally yet to experience this method as appetizing from a customer's perspective.) The sphaghetti does come with mutz or burrata, but if you forget to ask then you may still kindly request some Parmesan, which mind your outfit as the cheese will be provided from a rather large hand-held grater over your bowl. The meal as well as the view outside are both magical, and a great way to de-stress from a busy day of work or touring the city.
East Village, NY
Divya's Kitchen (Ayurvedic)
Great starters, cleansing drinks, but touch and go on the main course. The Avocado dip with sesame crackers and a light bite of rose-shaped watermelon radish was moreish, toasted, and unforgettable. The ginger and mint lemonade was somehow cooling and warming with a consistent sharpness. (I highly recommend drinking quickly or else the top half of the glass ends up watery and the bottom half with an unappetizing, semi floating ginger and mint blend.) Now for the Lasagna main course. The description included broccoli, spinach, carrots, a smokey sauce, mozarella, and a cashew béchamel sauce. I sat picturing something between a decadent Italian pizza and Thai sautéed vegetable cashew dish. Instead I bit into the equivalent of an overcooked and lackluster vegetable soup with a thick layer of hard mozarella ceiling. The cranberry sauce on the side could've saved the dish if not for the overkill in smokiness, and the lack of acidity that the presence of tomato would typically provide. Lasagna is an edible art with a focus primarily on layers and what each layer represents as well as provides. Health is key to good living, and so is balance!
A'Demi Coffee & Tea
Lower Manhattan, NY
I can typically tell if a coffee hot spot knows what they are doing by the taste of their hot chocolate and how they serve their tea. A'Demi's hot chocolate was sweet without the sweetness overpowering my senses. Bonus points that the hot chocolate made my inner child happy as I felt as though I was drinking candy.
Myx Creative Kitchen
Greenwich, Connecticut, USA
On a hot day the cold choose-your-own-bowl with grilled vegetables and balsamic vinaigrette is a solid win! I also enjoyed the bottled fresh unsweetened ice tea that one can easily take home to finish later. I must honestly admit I did not have the opportunity to fully enjoy the banana flavored No-tella Muffin but I'm certain if I had managed more than a bite after the filling bowl I would've loved every crumb.
Torico
Jersey City,NJ
Traditional, real ingredients, homemade, allergy friendly, and established in 1968. Torico Ice Cream Cakes, Scoops, Sandwiches, Pies, Pints, Cones, Soft Serves, Seasonal Flavors, Toppings, Sorbets, and Kits are designed to strengthen community bonds and create smiles across the ages, (including for your fur-babies.) I had the privelege of trying a lychee flavor whose near similarity only comes close to that of Ceres Litchi juice. If you like the taste of banana and snickers' bars then go for the peanutbutter chocolate banana crunch. It's heavenly. The lychee and peanutbutter unfortunately do not go together, but I still enjoyed both. The winning flavor and topping combo for me was a scoop of vanilla fudge along with a scoop of chunky cherry topped with hot fudge sauce. The decandence of a Sundae combined with dark cherry pieces where each flavor subtly soothes the taste buds is worthy of Michelin Stars!
Anixi
New York,NY
An all vegan mediterranean restuarant well worth the experience. The prickly pear and mint housemade soda tickles the throat for a second until the fresh mint washes the prickly sensation away. A unique experience. For starters, I highly recommend the Taramasalata (sour cream and onion flavor that sharpens with the addition of the orange 'caviar'), Hummus Masabacha (light chickpea flavor), and Kabocha Squash (a touch heavy on the pepper, but otherwise delightfully rich and smooth) combo paired with fresh, light, fluffy, warm, and moreish Za'atar bread, and thinly sliced Confit Potatoes. If you are a fan of a lemon, onion, and vinegar calamari flavor then to finish the Taramasalata make sure to order the piping hot Artichoke Tots. For me the saffron dip and lemon accompaniments ruined the Artichoke's flavor, but the green tahini dip enhanced it. I would not recommend trying the Preserved Lemon Cured 'Tuna'. The almost mince chopped sashimi 'tuna' had an off aftertaste and over powered the delicate avocado beneath it. The overly generous black 'caviar' layer on top was much too salty and the overly fried 'chips' far too oily. The Rose Malabi dessert was a near win. However, the heavily aromatic layer that looked like caramel sauce was placed on top instead of below the perfect pudding. For a heavenly finish to your meal you cannot go wrong by ordering the Medjool Date Cake. Fresh figs on a moat of chocoate fudge-like sauce poured professionaly over a chocolate cake with a thick chocolate mousse center could not possibly be more perfect, except it was. Alongside the triumphant tier of talent was the most delicious (almost Cornetto winning texture) nutty on-the-inside vanilla ice cream with edible gold on top. Cold, somewhat sticky, and absolutely mood enlightening, the mouthwatering Medjool magic ended the evening with euphoric satisfaction.
Six Senses Thimphu Restaurant
Thimphu, Bhutan
Aventurine crystals and quartz infused, aqua reflecting, nausea deflecting water served in a glass that captures the mountains' essence is an experience unlike any other. Close your eyes, pair the latter with a honey fermented water with a clementine wedge, and you will feel as though you are sipping Eiswein on Everest. For breakfast, if the celery, honey, and cucumber rehydrate shot is not available, then I highly recommend the Jasmine Blossom Tea. (Perfectly aromatic with a relaxing fragrance, while balanced in bitter and sweetness.) Most would argue that cereal, fruits, or even a millet pancake makes up for a satisfactory breakfast, but for the daring and different I recommend the Sautéed Spinach, Crisp Potatoes, and Multigrain Toast. The spinach, light as a feather on the tongue, blanched, and bright green is fresh and tasty. The potatoes are soft on the inside, crispy on the outside beyond perfection, and lightly topped with the right herbs. The crisp toast, served along with a creamy butter adds the right amount of sweet and saltiness to the dish. For dinner, I reccomend requesting a customized meal made of spaghetti, broccoli and cauliflower florets, and green olives in a white sauce. The warm and comforting meal truly hits the spot after a super healing holistic spa treatment.
Simply Bhutan Restaurant
Thimphu, Bhutan
A quick historical tour to experience Bhutan through the eyes of the Bhutanese in the form of storytelling and dance is a must. The tour ends in a quick game of Archery but not before first being invited to try Butter Tea and Sweetened Rice. The Tea, almost pink in color, has a sweet and smooth flavor. The sticky yellow rice, served with raisins, pairs harmoniously with the tea, much like the beautiful people of Bhutan do with their stunning landscape.
Carnatic Café
Domestic Departure Food Court,
New Delhi Airport
A feast for travelling royalty made up of Chai, mini Parle-G biscuits, a Butter Plain Dosa, Sambar, and Rose Strawberry Ice Cream. The Chai, served the proper way with two cups where the tall cup with the Chai must be poured a little at a time in the shorter and wider cup to cool the tea naturally simply makes sense. The Chai was slightly bitter but the sweetness of dipping the Parle-G into the Chai works well without having to add any sugar. The Dosa, almost the texture of an Uttapam, comes with a green, white, and orange chutney as well as a mild Sambar that elevates the palate. A thick, fluffy, and crispy Dosa requires quite the technical skill that deserves applause when achieved. The display of unique ice cream flavors left me intrigued and inspired. The Rose Strawberry flavor was not only smooth, creamy, and contained small bites of sweet, but also included the seeds of a strawberry visible throughout every bite. A welcoming meal from start to finish.
Nude Food Café
Mumbai, India
The first zero waste café in Mumbai makes delicious drinks and meals while focusing on zero waste. I ordered a Choconilla Milkshake that was not overly sweet, had a balanced mixture of vanilla and chocolate flavor, was refreshing on a hot day, smooth, and easy to down. I also had the opportunity to taste some garlic bread that came as a side to a sphaghetti dish. Almost every garlic bread I have ever tried (on nearly every continent) focuses primarily on the garlic flavor that leaves an overbearing aftertaste. My compliments to the Chefs that served us not only a colorful garlic bread with green herbs, red spices, and a nutty yellow garlic spread, but the toast was skillfully toasted without being burnt, the seeds enhanced the garlic flavor, and the aftertaste did not leave me craving mint or an overwhelming need to wash out the garlic taste in my mouth. Impressive concept and execution. Bravo!

Café Pura
Greenwich, London, UK
An Ayurvedic vegetarian restaurant. The perfectly stretchy mozzarella, tomato, spinach, and pesto Panini was tasty, served on bread that was crispy and not soggy, a bit rich overall, but it hit the spot for a quick lunch meal. The smooth hot chocolate was neither too bitter nor too sweet, and the steamed milk with cocoa powder on top added to the gentle and delicate flavor of the warm drink. My mind did a mini somersault while eating the mint chocolate chip ice cream because where the creamy texture was fantastic, and I loved the softness of the chocolate chips, at the same time I could taste that the mint was not natural. In summary, the entire meal, though missing a little je ne sais quoi, was wonderful in its simplicity.
Mildreds
Dalston, London, UK
Better as a dessert experience, and be wary of the spicy dishes if you prefer mild meals. The hot chocolate is nothing to rave about but did pair well with oat milk. The roasted sweet potato with apricot harissa butter and smoked salt tasted great but put more emphasis on the heat removing any sense of apricot or ability to appreciate the smoked salt at all. Similar was the result of trying the spinach, pea, and potato Tikki Burger (what appeared to be a restaurant favorite) served with brioche burger buns layered in a tomato and cashew makhani sauce that tasted more like hot sauce. The combination was overwhelmingly spicy given the mint chutney proved to be of the burning variety as well instead of a complimentary palate cleanser. Also, the burger buns were much larger than the tomato, cucumber, raw red onion, and leafy ingredients, which typically would be a good thing except that the bread was too thick, filling, and heavy. The patty itself was quite heavy but tasted fresh, flavorful, and was the exact right amount for the dish. The chips that were crispy on the outside verged on a bit too soft on the inside and was served without any sauce. I did not know this was even allowed. Needless to say my inner child was not amused. What did land Mildreds a spot on my travels list were their desserts especially their Crème Brûlée. It is near impossible to find such a treat as a vegan/vegetarian. The caramel topping on the vanilla custard pudding was the right kind of crispy that breaks easily under the spoon without overpowering the mouth in a gritty sugar taste. The pudding was similar to a caramel flan in texture, and though the morello cherries in the compote themselves were quite sharp, the sauce and pistachio puffed quinoa beads were beautiful and tasty. There was also a chocolate ganache cake that was moist with the proper layers and right amount of icing-to-cake ratio. Smooth ice cream that melts in the mouth, paired well with the cake and a delightful chocolate sauce that was neither too rich nor too milky. Go for the desserts, but if you choose to brave the food then make sure to keep an antacid in your purse, wallet, AND pocket.
Dishoom
Canary Wharf, London, UK
Thirsty after a day traveling around, Dishoom proved a wonderful restaurant to sit and have a nice drink while waiting for each meal. If you enjoy a good dose of lemon and bubbles but without the mind fuzz then I recommend the Nimbu Soda served sparkling and cold. If on a typical London Summer's day you find yourself chilled to the bone in the evening and in need of a pick me up then the Chocolate Chai/Tea is a must have. The spiced hot chocolate gets better with every sip and the glass fits the dessert flavor. I found the cream foam top and sprinkled cocoa powder a beautiful addition. The Matar Paneer/ Peas Cottage Cheese, somewhat lacking on the paneer/cottage cheese part, is packed with flavor and an aftertaste kick, but without the typical chili burn. The creaminess, pairing well with a plain rice dish, made the meal quite enjoyable. If you're looking for an appetizer or to simply add to your meal then go for the super delicious Sweet Potato Chaat/Savory snack with a fresh yogurt that's cooling and spiced but flavorful. The ambiance at night is loud, packed, and can feel a touch congested for those that are sound and crowd sensitive. There is a quiet seating area outside that's calm, serene, and a welcome escape for anyone needing a minute of peace.
Bianco43
Greenwich, London, UK
It is rare to find a tasty Margherita Pizza with the correct cheese to tomato ratio. It is also rare to find a Tortellini Ricotta and Spinach dish that is not too rich or oily, and finding one served in a sage sauce with fresh parmesan on top, well that places this dish well above a 5 star google review. I love a good lasagna but vegans and vegetarians, I find, struggle to find lasagnas that are not packed with random vegetables and soy based 'meats' ruining everything that makes a lasagna a "Garfield" favorite. The Fusilli Nonna Molly/Grandmother Molly, while not a lasagna, tastes close to a deconstructed version with its burrata stracciatella, baked tomatoes, and breadcrumbs. The restaurant itself is currently not suited for large parties, though I hope it continues to grow into one, but it does have the right setting for a platonic or romantic date lunch and/or dinner.
Dark Sugars Cocoa House
Greenwich, London, UK
It is tough not to fall in love with a place that has a truffle tasting table. The Overdose Truffle was rich with a hint of bitter, the type of chocolates that if placed in a tiny bowl next to a hot pot of tea or coffee would make a Tea Room a winner. As someone unable to handle the caffeine in tea or coffee, I was not the biggest fan of the bitter mocha coffee taste of the Dark Hot Chocolate. Were I able to enjoy a good Mocha, I am sure I would have loved the hot chocolate. I have recently discovered that I am a huge Banana Fosters fan and that flavor pounced through the Chocolate Banana Caramel gelato in an amazing, rich, and soft serve swirl where I could still differentiate the flavors of vanilla and chocolate from the banana. One has to be truly skilled to reach such a level of ice cream excellence. The store has two separate ice cream sections, one for white chocolate and the other more focused on milk and dark chocolate. There are also sorbet ice creams for those that prefer a more fruity flavoring. On the second floor sits a lounge where one can enjoy teas, coffees, hot chocolates, and chocolate bars, pearls, pralines, and truffles. Dark Sugars Cocoa House is a chocolate wonderland full of surprises.
Bombay Brasserie
Courtfield Rd, London, UK
I have a pet peeve when it comes to fine dining that focuses mainly on the dining. Yes, the decor of the rooms were outstanding and the meal a close second, but to lack in the basic facilities department (no one should be forced to sit on the lavatory fully clothed just to get the door closed, the distance between the door and the toilet seat should be at least the same distance as on an airplane) and an overconfident waiter can dock points in stardom quite quickly. That aside, the mini chickpea papads with a tangy, spicy, sweet, and moreish mango chutney were addictive beyond reason. I would pay to buy them in a store to consume daily. The grilled paneer starter blew my mind as it tasted like barbecue but without any barbecue sauce. The eggless garlic naan was not overpowering in garlic flavor, and the soft texture of the plain naan melted with ease in my mouth. The chana/chickpeas were gentle and easy to consume, the contents of the raita/yogurt dressing did not require huge bites, which is often a raita/yogurt dressing issue. The mild spices in the fresh raita/yogurt dressing added an umami that made it difficult to stop consuming the palate cleanser. Okra/Lady's fingers is a sticky mess and a challenge for any chef but to make okra/lady's fingers not only crisp and soft but also taste the same as smoked asparagus without an asparagus touching the dish had my mind racing with inspiration. Thank you Chef for not disappointing at all!
Kinaara
InterContinental Hotel, London, UK
I had a rather tapas type experience while dining at this restaurant, and learnt the hard way why one should not consume hot chocolate when trying to properly experience an Indian cuisine. Thick, creamy, and yet somehow watery and capable of sticking in the throat it is a must-miss on the menu. The Amuse-Bouche Aloo Pakora/Hors D'oeuvre Potato Fritter, however, was a must-have! The somewhat spicy mustard-like yogurt, crispy fried potato, mint chutney drop, and red leaf garnishing daintily balanced on top was munch friendly and fantastic. The flakiness of the roti reminded me of a croissant and I appreciated the skill of the flat, horizontal attached layers. I also had the opportunity to try moreish Jersey Potatoes in London, a comforting and homely Paneer Butter Masala/ Cottage Cheese Butter Spices, and a super spicy Saag/Leaves with baby corn as well as corn off the cob. The spiced raita/yogurt dressing paired well with everything I tried and saved me from reaching for an antacid. Despite the close connection to the InterContinental Hotel, the stunning ceiling paintings, and decorated pillars, the restaurant was quite empty and therefore peaceful.
Sagar Vegan & Vegetarian Restaurant
Leicester Square, London, UK
I am a huge fan of Pani Puri/Water Deep-Fried Bread, and when I receive an already filled Puri/Deep-Fried Bread paired with a not too spicy mint green Pani/Water, I know I am in for a treat. Light, full of flavor, and as it should be, but if a Tamarind sauce is not provided or given in time then order the Aloo Papri Chaat/Potato Dough Wafer Savory Snack early on to fill up the Puri/Deep-Fried Bread with. A brilliant family-fun experience. I also love a thick cashew sauced Matar Paneer/Peas Cottage Cheese with lots of paneer and peas to share. The meal paired well with a Rice Pulao/Pilaf that included green beans, carrots, and yes, more peas. One could taste the freshness, every spice, and each ingredient in all the dishes. Located near Piccadilly Circus, you cannot go wrong with a shop and a stop here. The Chocolate Vegan ice cream (the only flavor available as the others were all quickly sold out), contained chocolate chips and what appeared to be salt crystals mixed into the rich, creamy chocolate. Friendly staff and close seating, whether you are happy or down, Sagar is a place of comfort and wins.
Vantra
Wardour Street, London, UK
A Malaysian and Indonesian Fusion Cuisine with a mixture of Asian inspired dishes located in front of the Chinatown Gate. Do not fear the stairs leading to the restaurant, they lead to a place of culinary paradise. The Lo Ho Fun/Flat Rice Noodle had the right mix of mushrooms, blanched leaves, sprouts, sesame seeds, fresh coriander leaves, and noodles. The added Tamari/Japanese Soy and Rice Sauce fills the heart and stomach with warmth. It is an entirely different experience to consume a meal that is focused on happiness, good health, and caring vibes especially when stepping off the rather contrasting, hectic streets of London. The Chocolate Brownie Truffle Torte/Cake is a mouthful to say but worth the mouth-melting chocolate cookie base, powdered ganache, and fresh blueberries decoration. Beneath this gastronomy of astronomy lies a galaxy swirl of sweet syrup that is almost maple but closer to raspberry in color. I highly recommend eating the fresh raspberry last for a beautiful aftertaste. The ethos of this restaurant is to cook allergy friendly dishes to the point that they do not cook in oil but may add a touch of olive oil to certain dishes. Do ask about almonds and coconuts if you have a severe nut allergy, but otherwise peanuts and cashews are not used. Regardless of the cuisine or diet, I would be elated for more restaurants to take on a similar ethos in their cooking methods. Meat lovers deserve to enjoy their meals with just as much joy as Veggie lovers are finally able to. A world that respects one another's differences is a world that welcomes everyone to the same dining table. I have great admiration and respect for any Chef and person capable of achieving that level of love.
abcV
East 19th Street, NYC
I am picky about a good smoothie, but the hint of Pine and well mixed flavors, light and yet each one discernible, made for a superb dessert throughout dinner. Who knew that pine pollen, jungle peanut butter, dates, bananas, and almond milk paired so well together? Pity, I only received the drink during the main course after a couple of reminders. The fine dining experience was once again a tapas of tastes. There were two Dosa's for starters (both titled the same on the menu but with different sides, which I commend the Kitchen for not confusing the two), and a green chickpea hummus. The hummus had a rich smokey flavor and was served with a mixture of vegetables that had their stalks intact. The dosa's were not overly oily or buttery as is often the problem. The first dosa, served with a rather indescribable sambar (think sour sulphur fire with no discernible taste) and a bearable minty chutney, was saved by a moreish apricot chutney and a tasty, almost Greek-sour yogurt that came with the second dosa. The second dosa would have been my favorite if only the chaotic sprouts were not layered atop to hide the perfectly salted avocado slices beneath. Even as a vegan and/or vegetarian one should not have to hunt for their food in a restaurant. Defeats the purpose. I should also point out here that the abcV restaurant is vegetarian but vegan friendly. Double check whether the alcohol drinks menu actually does or does not contain alcohol as the titles can cause confusion. Typically I focus more on the food but the decor was one I feel some may wish to know about before choosing this locale. The beautiful seating and mismatched lighting somehow complemented the design of the back wall. Unfortunately, the non-conservative painting and decor at the front of the restaurant appeared made for a different type of dining experience. The white and beige theme meant that anyone wearing any sort of color stood out in stark contrast. The napkins seemed of questionable quality and nothing, not even a lemon bowl, was provided for those eating with their hands. (It's impractical to have to eat a Dosa with a knife and fork). A somewhat unsanitary experience given the restaurant is located in New York City where hand sanitizer is a necessary accessory, perhaps unknown to those simply passing through. If you prefer a peaceful evening then fair warning the ambience is so loud with chatter that one struggles to hear the person sitting directly in front of them. What I did appreciate was how filling the starters were, but not that we had to request new plates and cutlery to enjoy the main meal. The main dishes consisted of Gigantic beans, Fava beans, Cauliflower, and a Beetroot dish. The Gigantic beans were spicy but delicious, and the Fava beans were a bit grainy with a bite of chili, but paired well with the thinly sliced Beetroot. The bursts of dill, lemon, and thinly sliced Cornichons made for an interesting and tasty addition to the beetroot. Now, I am not a fan of char-grilled vegetables, but the Cauliflower with its almost cheesy but not overpowering creaminess, and fresh leaves was superb. I say that ignoring the red sauce that can be unappetizing for those who do not enjoy an extra hot super spiciness. Almost every dish was packed with flavor and only lacked a touch on the presentation side. Had I not felt as though my sides would burst after the tapas tasting of the main meals, I perhaps would have liked to try the Thai tea ice cream sundae with black sugar boba and Indian mango, or the Birch Bark Sorbet. I did have the opportunity to try a tiny bite of a chocolate cookie that I instantly regretted. It's an odd experience to taste something that your mind and eyes tell you should be heavenly but your taste buds cannot forgive the saltiness and richness coating every cocoa powdered piece of doughy, melted chocolate fudge chewiness. I am also still not entirely sure if I am a fan of the random tea plates used as dessert plates. For those with a lemon and chili allergy, one might struggle to find a tasty starter and main course to enjoy. For those with a coconut allergy there are very few desserts one can try if one has room enough after the select meals to choose from. I will say that the Staff and Chefs work hard to accommodate the multitude of guests, and with a touch more experience and culinary concept refinement abcV could be deserving of a star.
Walkway Over The Hudson
Poughkeepsie, NY
Check the weather before attempting The Walkway Over the Hudson, and wear the appropriate shoes to walk on pavement for at least an hour. One can book a ride for those that would like to enjoy the view while resting their legs. There are a lot of pictures on the sides of the bridge's rail to read and remain entertained throughout the peaceful walk. As the "world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge" the view is quite breathtaking with the ships rushing by beneath, a valley of trees to either side and the town almost hidden from view. I truly appreciated the ability to see the train tracks winding around the edge of the land, the horizon-hugging-clouds, clearest of blue skies, and meet the warm helpful locals. If you find the time, try to visit Millbrook afterwards, though the shopping there might make the wallet cry, they do have the most interesting and unique items for sale. I'll forever cherish my little retro radio with brilliant quality sound.

Midtown Manhattan, NYC
No shoes permitted past the entrance or to the bathroom so wear socks! If you have short legs, this restaurant's design is a dream come true. If you enjoy savory pancakes, you are going to thoroughly enjoy dining here. I highly recommend the Korean Pancakes Platter! My favorite of the assortment presented was the spinach and sweet chili plus mango sauce. A close runner up was the pumpkin dipped in a scallion sauce and then the edamame and spinach sauce of the Kale Dumplings' starter I thought to try beforehand. The tofu skin wrapped around the Dumplings was arguably healthy but bland as can be, and the tough texture of the tofu skin a mental challenge to consume. The last pancake on the platter was Kimchi dipped in a scallion sauce, and though light in intensity, the flavor seemed an acquired taste. Along with the meal I tried a pear juice that I personally would have preferred iced, but was still tasty at room temperature. For that reason I truly appreciated a cold lychee juice in sparkling water served with a few lychees inside the glass. If you enjoy a hot and healthy but also light meal then pair the Avocado and Rice Stone Bowl with some Kimbap (vegan Korean sushi rolls). There is not much I can say for either dish other than the one is hot (as in Do Not touch the bowl even after 30minutes of it sizzling away silently in front of you), the other cold, and both were yummy. For dessert I turned back to a platter and delighted in the three scoops of plant-based ice creams presented. The vanilla almond was excellent in taste and texture, and paired well with a bite of chocolate ice cream. Unfortunately, the wild berry didn't play well with the other two flavors and came across particularly sour in comparison. As far as decor and attire, I would recommend not fussing with a dress as you may find yourself needing to climb around fellow guests to reach your designated seats. As for privacy, the beautiful artwork dividing tables for four people into two are beautiful and contrast quite noticeably to the art on the walls. Out of respect for the staff, I recommend wearing a mask whenever not seated and enjoying your meal. Also, an important heads up. Be mindful that should you need the bathroom, there is a small step and then Do Not walk straight ahead into the kitchen. Turn either left or right, (and watch out for shoes hidden under the curtain on the step.) There is peace among the chaos, you just need to watch where you point your toes.
Dirt Candy
Lower East Side Manhattan, NYC
I did not realize how much I value a shadow-leaf plant and forest vibe decor until dining here. Also, before diving into the meals, the bathrooms are neat and spacious and plentiful! The open kitchen design does remove a touch of the surprise around each dish but nevertheless should not remove one from the experience. A heads up for little legs, the barstools in the waiting area might require you to stand and wait. Also, high heels will not suffice to reach the floor when seated at your designated table. Be aware that not all the courses are mentioned on the menu, and most thoughtfully, careful attention is given to making sure the gourmet dishes are filling. To that point, I would recommend not eating anything five hours before having dinner at this restaurant. The meals are served within the space of two hours, and it is not permitted to stay longer than the two hour maximum. (Basically eat with intention and digest later.) The first dish, served in a tin, was a black imitation caviar with cream cheese and rounded cucumber balls that burst with flavor. Each bite was perfectly salted and refreshing, and did beg toward the end for a sliver of imitation salmon. Forks down the best dish I have been blessed to enjoy this year had to be the mushroom dish that came next. The meal itself transported one's mind to a forest wonderland, impeccable and inspiring in presentation and every bite. The mushroom pastry brought me back to Belgium's 'Koninginnehapje', but with more of a cold, somehow sweet and tangy, chocolate croissant vibe. The caffeine-free mushroom-cino on the side made me feel as if I was drinking the forest with every gulp. Earthy, petrichor, and a foam creamy froth that captures warmth and tingles in the nose made me dream of seconds long after the evening finished. Respect to the Chef for this masterpiece! A rainbow bell pepper palate cleanser in pistachio and a lot of oil made for a pleasing third course. The lemon sour cauliflower dish, with cauliflower steaks shaved so thin it made me think of a cabbage and Tagliatelle pasta two-in-one, fell flat to the point I could not even finish half the plate of dish soap scented disaster. The chili oil and lasagna muse would have made this dish a top favorite but the intensity of the lemon overwhelmed and curdled the stomach after the softness of the prior creamy mushrooms. To the rescue came a yellow beet salad and puree with a beet dumpling that was a size too big for a petite mouth. In order to truly enjoy the sauce the dumpling should have been served purely on the spoon as opposed to in a bowl and along with chopsticks that were bound to break the delicate dumpling during transfer to the spoon. The hard and crunchy beetroot balls were super tasty and I will admit it was fun to eat them with the chopsticks. The next dish caught me by surprise as I love a good barbecue flavor and squash happens to be one of my favorite vegetables. However, the thick squash sauce was rich and filling and would have made for a perfect soup, but unfortunately the delicate flavor was lost to the overpowering barbecue flavor on top. That said, the sesame seeds and crunchiness of what could have been a fish tempura or bbq ribs had this been a meat dish was not only rich and filling but tasty and tangy in all the right ways. Still less is more and this dish would have scored higher points by keeping this in mind. I will add here that every dish scored perfection with regards to presentation, and paired with its own cutlery. I also appreciated the separation of vegan vs. vegetarian as options for the courses served. The next dish made me giggle with glee as the mini carrot pizza with carrot pepperoni, and sticky or gooey vegan cheese, was meant as a joke because many people are rumored to buy a pizza after consuming a gourmet dinner as the portions are typically petite. Rest assured the richness of each dish did not require the carrot pizza but it was a big treat for my inner child and so no complaints there. My second favorite dish of the evening had to be the potato dessert. Genius in execution! The Jalebi reminiscent sprinkles and sweet and salty french fry flakes were a pure joy to behold! The foam cream top, caramel cold ice cream center, and soft cake bottom were all potato based and beautiful. Sweet and tangy throughout, I could not get enough. The basil sugar cube that followed had an indescribable flavor as the cube was neither truly sweet nor tangy but captured an umami that proved the perfect ending to a taste-filled evening. Most grateful!
